4G+ launch to boost coverage and better experience
Bluesky Cook Islands has announced it will launch the first 4G+ service, currently the world’s fastest commercial mobile network technology, to Rarotonga and Aitutaki on Friday 24 March 2017.
The soft launch reflects Bluesky’s ongoing commitment to offer new and innovative products and services to its customers and to ensure that the Cook Islands remains current with its technology offering.
“4G+ is an exciting upgrade to our Mobile Network capability”, said Country Manager, Phillip Henderson.
“This is an example of the leverage of being part of the Bluesky Group, we have been able to co-ordinate this deployment concurrently with similar rollouts with Bluesky American Samoa and  Bluesky Samoa. Importantly the Network upgrade has been contracted with a world leading vendor in Huawei Technologies. This world class vendor ensures that the very latest technology is deployed and supported by extensive global resources. We do appreciate as part of the Network upgrade, customers have been experiencing planned network interruptions over the last few weeks as the engineering team have upgraded each cell site.”
With the launch, Bluesky is offering improved coverage across Rarotonga and Aitutaki enabling a better mobile digital experience for compatible 4G consumer smartphone users.
“Increased capacity, increased coverage, faster download speeds and improved customer experience have been the main focus for Bluesky’s 4G initiative.
“By bringing 4G+ technology to Rarotonga and Aitutaki, we are offering our local consumer and business customers a better mobile data experience that will translate into productivity improvements, expanded business opportunities, and exciting new entertainment options.” 4G+ enables additional services to be offered and Bluesky will be announcing new products and services enabled by this technology over the coming months.”
This also prepares the Mobile Network to take advantage of the proposed Submarine Cable system when it is commissioned.
With the new 4G+ service, both postpaid and prepaid customers will have access to higher data speeds from almost anywhere on Rarotonga and Aitutaki.
Customers who have a 4G enabled handset with a 4G SIM will be able to enjoy the service from almost anywhere on the island. These compatible mobile devices are available from Bluesky and other mobile phone retailers who have been advised of the requirements for 4G+ service.
The 4G enabled handsets which are currently available at Bluesky outlets are; Apple iPhone 6s, Apple iPhone 7, Apple iPhone 7 Plus, Apple iPhone SE, Aspera R7, Aspera R8, HTC 628, Huawei GR3, Huawei P9, Samsung S7, Samsung S7 Edge & Sony Xperia Z5.
Prior to today’s launch, Bluesky technicians have been busy running tests for the new service and ensuring everything is ready.
“The live performance benchmark tests on 4G+ has been brilliant,” said Chief Technology Officer, Robert McFadzien.
“Having observed the speeds that it’s achieving first-hand, on our very own network, and not just from the technical hyped documentation, the team is very excited as it is an enabler for developing other enhanced services.”
The upgrade includes more network capacity, three new cell-sites to increase 2G, 3G and 4G coverage, particularly around the Tikioki, Central Avarua and Puaikura areas.
“We have also added sectors to improve coverage up Takuvaine Valley,” said McFadzien.
“There will also be noticeable improvement to in-building coverage on 4G+ but the 4G+ service can only be accessed with compatible mobiles which support 4G.
Mobile customers will need to bring their handsets into the main Bluesky office in Parekura to set up the new service. Or watch out for our roadshows who will be able to check your phone and SIM compatibility.
The office is open from 8am-4:00pm for customers to come in.
