COOK ISLANDS, Rarotonga, Aug. 2010 — Telecom Cook Islands has introduced its new Mobile data service known as “Koka Connect” to all Post-paid subscribers across the Cook Islands. For the technically minded, it is known as “GPRS”.
General packet radio service (GPRS) is a Mobile data service available to all users of cellular communication.

The new service offers post paid Mobile customers 300 MB of data usage on their Mobile for a one off registration fee of $25.00 and a monthly fee of $20.00. Data charges of $0.11 per Mb will be charged for usage in excess of the 300 Mb cap.
The service provides Mobile customers access to emailing, the internet and popular social networking sites such as Face book and Twitter.

“Our data service is being offered first to our Post-paid customers as we consider them to be more likely to have a business need for the service,” said Jules Maher, CEO. “We are working on extending the service to Pre-paid customers next”.
“We believe that this new service will appeal to business people on the move, for easy checking and sending emails, and accessing favourite internet sites. It’s like taking your office PC with you in your hand (although the data speeds are obviously slower and it is not designed for downloading large files). We have set the price and cap after consultation with customers who trialled this service for us, and we hope other customers consider it good value for money too. We expect to introduce more innovations over the coming months,” he added.

Getting data started with the new Mobile service will be an easy one step process for some users. Other customers may need to search and download GPRS settings, but for most data capable handsets all that is done automatically. Post-paid customers merely come into the main Telecom outlet and buy a data capable phone or get Telecom to help with the settings and provision the Koka Connect/GPRS service to their SIM card and insert it into the phone. Accept and start surfing.
