Speedier Mobile Data
In April we said we would be upgrading our GSM system for faster Mobile Data. We have now done this through the introduction of new “EDGE” technology, doubling the speed to a maximum of 230kbs. Data roamers on Telecom New Zealand, Vodafone NZ and AT&T mobiles can now access this service as well as local customers. We also introduced roaming for Prepaid Mobile phone customers of Telstra (Australia).
Infrastructure Snapshot
• A new cell phone tower and fibre optic termination station were erected at Kiikii for better mobile and TV coverage;
• A new fibre optic termination station at the Airport in Nikao is almost complete. This will deliver faster, more reliable internet service to customers in a radius of 2km;
• Three fibre optic termination stations are planned for installation around Rarotonga over the next 9 months.
