An image of the world globe depicting friends and family and a set of headphones will grace the cover of next year’s 2012 Cook Islands telephone directory.

Arorangi resident Mata Priest’s artwork of the globe showing “family and family connections” through a grid of individual pictures of family on their mobile phones, on the internet, flags of the countries they live in, and modern technology was announced as the winning entry of Telecom Cook Islands’ inaugural phone book design competition.

Mata said she was inspired by her mum to enter the Telecom Directory Cover Art Competition. “My first thought of "Family and family connections" was how my relatives and I keep in touch, and my mum had the globe idea where I could position and show my family around the world representing a family gathering.” she said. For winning Mata received $1500, a new phone to the value of $250, a sim card, and $100 credit.

Telecom’s chief executive Jules Maher said “the image’s worldwide family connection was the key to winning the event”.
The Telecom Directory Art Competition, now an annual event is a way of giving back to the community while representing Cook Islands culture. Entry was restricted to Cook Islanders and permanent residents, with judging criteria focussed on family and family connection images, he said.

Sales and marketing manager Damien Beddoes said “The phone books White and Yellow Pages is one of the most widely read and referenced books in the community, we believe the public should have a say in what graces the cover, and we think the cover should reflect the community that the book seeks to serve and represent.”
